Buildings & Materials

Varying typologies, materiality, and usage make 1st Street a mishmash of building placement.  Then there’s Electrical substation on the corner of Lomas Blvd. and 1st St.  — those rarely feel well placed already.  Extended vacancies of nearby buildings require tenants and adaptive re-use to accelerate revitalization. The street doesn’t require a whole lot more to generate:

  • connectivity
  • further revitalization
  • and sense of place

Details & Street Furniture

Functional, decorative, or a waste of material.  Duck Vs. Shed.  There are definitely a great many interesting details (see example:  Windows) to be found near our site. The best examples of structural details are the buildings with exteriors comprised of brick and concrete —  the former brewery to the east and the Wool Warehouse to the south. One such important detail to the urban environment of vital areas is through use of street furniture.

Street furniture is more than just some stuff you see around the streets.  It is more than just a traffic light box, a bench, or a planter.    It is also an indicator of the vitality within and around public spaces — encompassing lighting, safety, signage, destination markers, public art, and etc.  Street furniture is both important for visitors and occupants of the area in which they are placed. Street furniture can convey a sense of  ownership of the public area by occupants of nearby buildings and establish an identity for the surrounding neighborhood.

1st street could benefit both from adding more street furnishings as well as the removal of others.

Paving & Landscape

Aside from concrete and asphalt, paving here is primarily a decorative device.  Although  there are psychological elements to be gained from changing pavement patterns.  1st Street, like the buildings and building materials is also pretty random which make up the pedestrian walkways.  The types of pavement in urban environment affects temperature, noise, and  pollution levels.  The Cell Theatre and the neighbors and visitors would benefit greatly from green pavement. It’s tricky to balance vegetation in a downtown setting — more so due to the region and  it’s heat during summer, but crucial for goals regarding sustainability.

Downtown revitalization requires additional landscaping to improve the air quality from vehicular traffic and railway particulates.  The Cell Theatre Addition space should include within the Program:

— as well as increasing seating capacity.

Find a means of stitching building and street elements to better connect.  Increase vegetation and continue to add unique street furniture in an effort to continue making, “Albuquerque Downtown … a must-see.
